William Apess (1798-1839) was a Native American writer, activist, and Methodist preacher of Pequot and white descent. He was born in Colrain, Massachusetts and is best known for his writings on Native American rights, particularly his book "A Son of the Forest" (1829) which is considered the first published autobiography by a Native American. Apess also wrote extensively about Christianity and the treatment of Native Americans by the white settlers in America. He traveled extensively throughout New England, preaching and advocating for the rights of his people. Apess died in 1839 in New York City.
